A word from Jim:
It is kind of a cool story how I got reinvolved with Jack the bike man. In 2003 my son was 6 or 7 and I was a Boy Scouts den father. I read a story about Jack Bike Man collecting and building in donating bikes for kids for them. I took our Boy Scout troop there for several bike building sessions prior to the holidays. We also did bicycle collections in the community and brought the bikes to Jack. As the boys got older we no longer did work with Jack, but I never lost touch with him. I would see his bicycle races, and see him around town. Then 6 months ago my friend, Mariano Garcia a lawyer at Sercey, Denny, Scarola, Barnhart, and Shipley, was very persistent in asking me to join the board. I joined, and it seemed like a natural progression!
I am fully enjoying myself and the opportunity to give back to Jack, who was so good to my boys at a young age, and the community who so much needs what he has to offer. Jack’s shop has grown in size from the one room tiny shop in Northwood, to a downtown commercial location occupying many many thousands of feet of space, storing thousands and thousands of bicycles. It’s truly an amazing story, and he provides a substantial number of jobs, does skills training for young people, not to mention giving away hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of bicycles every year to kids who can’t otherwise afford them!
